ASVAB Study Guide

Studying for the ASVAB is less about memorizing facts and more about knowing what each subtest wants and practicing it. This guide breaks down every subtest, gives you a study plan you can finish in a few weeks, and shares the CAT-ASVAB facts that surprise first-time test takers. All facts about the test itself come from official ASVAB test information.

The nine ASVAB subtests

General Science (GS): biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Arithmetic Reasoning (AR): multi-step word problems with percentages, ratios, and rates. Word Knowledge (WK): vocabulary and synonyms. Paragraph Comprehension (PC): reading short passages for the main idea and details.

Math Knowledge (MK): algebra, geometry, and number properties. Electronics Information (EI): current, voltage, resistance, and circuits. Auto & Shop Information: on the CAT-ASVAB these are two separate subtests, Automotive Information and Shop Information, covering vehicle systems and hand tools. Mechanical Comprehension (MC): levers, gears, pulleys, and simple machines. Assembling Objects (AO): spatial reasoning and how shapes fit together.

A 6-week study plan

Week 1 to 2: Focus on the AFQT subtests, AR, MK, WK, and PC. Take a short diagnostic to find your weakest area. Week 3 to 4: Drill your weakest AFQT subtest daily and add General Science review. Week 5: Add Electronics, Auto & Shop, and Mechanical Comprehension. Week 6: Take full timed practice tests, review every miss, and rest the day before your test.

Short, daily sessions beat long cram sessions. Twenty to thirty focused minutes a day, with a few full practice tests mixed in, builds both knowledge and the pacing you need for a timed test.

CAT-ASVAB facts

The CAT-ASVAB is adaptive. It starts at medium difficulty and adjusts up or down based on your answers, . You cannot change an answer after moving on. Each subtest is timed. On the CAT-ASVAB, Automotive Information and Shop Information are separate subtests. Knowing this in advance helps you budget your time and avoid the common mistake of lingering on one question.
